Sport specialization is such a concerning topic that medical organizations have released statements warning of this practice. Despite these warnings, evidence suggests that this information is being ignored. Sport specialization may partially explain the increase in the frequency and severity of pediatric musculoskeletal injuries over the past two decades. This lecture will discuss the current evidence linking sport specialization to injury, as well as evidence-based recommendations for safe participation in youth sport. Athletic trainers are the forefront of youth sport participation and knowledge regarding this import topic is imperative to changing the environment and culture surrounding sport specialization.

This course consists of 1 lesson and a final exam.
Lesson 1:Prevalence and Consequences of Early Sport Specialization Among Adolescent Athletes
The lessons consist of video and optional supplemental materials. For the final exam, participants can take a maximum of 3 attempts to achieve a passing score of 80% or higher. Participants who achieve a passing score can print out a course certificate of completion. Participants who do not pass the final exam after 3 attempts will need to re-pay for and repeat the entire course to attempt to earn credit.

About the Instructor
David R. Bell, PhD, ATC, Assistant Professor in the Departments of Kinesiology and Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the Univ
Dr. David Bell is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Kinesiology and Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Dr. Bell earned his B.A. and PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2001 & 2010) and his Master’s Degree from the University of Virginia in 2002. He teaches in the Athletic Training Program and serves as the director of the Wisconsin Injury in Sport Laboratory. His research is focused on identifying risk factors for knee injury including neuromuscular asymmetries and sport specialization. Additionally, he is focused on improving outcomes after knee surgery including refining rehabilitation strategies, return to activity guidelines, and risk factors for second ACL injuries.
He has athletic training clinical experience at the Division I and II levels as well as high school clinic outreach. He has over 35 peer-reviewed publications and 85 abstract presentations. His work has been funded by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association, the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, and the American College of Sports Medicine. He was named the 2017 New Investigator of the Year for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Research and Education Foundation.
Eric Post, MS, ATC,
Eric Post is a 4th year PhD student in the Wisconsin Injury in Sport Laboratory. Eric’s research focuses on youth sports safety and the effects of early sport specialization and excessive sport volume on injury risk in youth athletes.
Eric graduated with his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology-Athletic Training from UW-Madison in 2011 and then completed his master’s degree in athletic training at Illinois State University in 2014.
