2. Define the role of physical inactivity as the cause of chronic disease states, such as obesity, diabetes, and some cancers.
3. Evaluate the role of exercise and physical activity in the treatment and recovery from chronic disease states, such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, and arthritis.

About the Instructor
Travis S. Gallagher, ATC
Travis Gallagher is a licensed athletic trainer at Nationwide Children?s Hospital. In 2011 he began to build what would become the Play Strong program. Through extensive reviews of the current literature and similar programs, as well as consultation with the Oncology department at Nationwide Children?s, the Play Strong program was built. Continuing education conferences were attended, including American College of Sports Medicine? Cancer Exercise Trainer, East Carolina University?s Childhood Obesity Summit and Self-Determination Theory Conference (behavior-change psychology). Since the program launched in 2012, over 400 patients have been treated in the Play Strong physical activity program. As of yet unpublished data has shown patient improvements in Enjoyment of Physical Activity (PACES), cardiovascular endurance (PACER), and functional movement skills (FMS). We just concluded a study that shows clinically significant results when comparing HIIT exercise to game-based play in heart rate, RPE, and enjoyment. Travis has presented on Play Strong at the local level (OSU?s Brain Tumor Survivorship Conference, OATA 2013), regional (GLATA 2014), and upcoming this summer the national level (NATA 2016, US Play Coalition 2016). Finally, the Play Strong program is a part of the Pediatric Oncology Exercise Manual (Calgary, Canada).
