Clinician's Guide to Evaluation Research: How to look beyond the p Value
1.00 BOC Approved Clinical Home Study EBP CEU's
COST: $ 29.99 - EXPIRATION DATE: 2018-12-31
Recent research into the attitudes towards evidence-based practice (EBP) and the implementation of EBP has indicated several deficiencies in clinical Athletic Trainers. While most Athletic Trainers acknowledge the importance of using EBP in clinical practice and Athletic Training education, they have also indicated the presence of barriers and other factors that impact their ability to implement the practice of EBP. These barriers and factors include:
Access to resources
Insufficient knowledge of EBP principles
Low confidence in their ability to implement EBP
Inability to critically appraise literature
Inexperience promoting the use of EBP in the critical thinking process
This course is designed to improve clinician knowledge in the critical appraisal of research literature. Participants will learn to identify and understand important statistical measures that indicate research meaningfulness, gain confidence in their ability to read and understand research literature, and use critical thinking tools to apply research results to clinical practice.
This course fulfills the EBP BOC CEU requirement for Athletic Trainers.
1. Define the measures that establish usefulness of researched treatments/interventions including: effect size, confidence intervals, power, risk ratios, numbers needed to treat, and minimal clinically important differences
2. Evaluate the usefulness of a research result using the above metrics
3. Interpret the usefulness of research results
4. Justify using (or not using) interventions based on a deeper examination of the evidence
5.Compare and contrast "statistical significance" and "clinical significance"
Taking This Course
This course consists of 1 lesson and a final exam.
The lesson consists of a video and or other lesson materials. For the final exam, participants can take a maximum of 2 attempts to achieve a passing score of 80% or higher. Participants who achieve a passing score can print out a GLATA EBP BOC certificate of completion. About the Instructor
Thomas Cappaert, Ph.D., ATC, CSCS
Dr. Cappaert has been teaching Biostatistics to undergraduate and graduate Health Science students for 16 years, and principles of EBP in various courses for the last 10 years. His current teaching load includes graduate students who are also practicing clinically and have a vested interest in being able to interpret research in a way that not only addresses statistical significance, but practical significance as well. This forces him to teach Biostatistics with a strong emphasis on presenting and interpreting the meaningfulness of research outcomes as they relate to clinical practice; it is a cornerstone of Dr. Cappaert's teaching philosophy. Dr. Cappaert has developed presentation and scholarly products that attempt to “demystify” statistics and make them accessible to clinicians. His focus is to give clinicians the tools to critically appraise research and make informed decisions about their applicability to clinical practice.
