This course addresses the knowledge gap between the current clinical treatment of concussion and the latest evidence for developing better clinical guidelines. The presentation covers the epidemiology of concussion, as well as newly-revised symptom clusters that may appear in a concussed athlete.
This course fulfills the EBP BOC CEU requirement for Athletic Trainers.
1. Describe current research regarding sports-related concussion
2. Identify sports at high risk for concussion at both the high school and collegiate level
3. Express the importance of a multifaceted approach to concussion assessment
4. Define factors that influence concussion outcomes, specifically sex and age differences and whether the athletes have a history of multiple concussions
5. Separate hysteria from science: What are the real facts on subcussive blows and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in relation to long-term effects of concussion?
Taking This Course
This course consists of 1 lesson and a final exam.
The lesson consists of a video and or other lesson materials. For the final exam, participants can take a maximum of 2 attempts to achieve a passing score of 80% or higher. Participants who achieve a passing score can print out a GLATA EBP BOC certificate of completion. Participants who do not pass the final exam after 2 attempts will need to re-pay for and repeat the entire course to attempt to earn credit.
When registering for this course, select any state. Age level does not apply, so just select any. Governing Body must be GLATA, Specialty must be EBP, and Student Role must be Athletic Trainer.
Student Registration and GLATA Course Instructions
Students will first have to register as a student by filling out and submitting a completed Innovative CEUs, LLC (ICEU) student registration page .
On ICEU students registration page student needs to click on credentials top took bar on right to add Credentials. To qualify for all of the GLATA EBP BOC courses: Student Credentials must be listed as indicated below:
Age Level: Does NOT apply, just pick one age level
Governing Body: Must be GLATA
Specialty: must be EBP
Student Role: must be Athletic Trainer
After setting their student credentials all available GLATA BOC EBP Courses will be displayed on the students Home Page (Click on the Home Button).
Any of the GLATA EBP courses seen on students ICEU Home Page, can be added to their cart by clicking the Add to Cart button.
After selecting GLATA EBP courses students want to purchase, they can check out of shopping cart and put in a COUPON Code if they have one prior to check out.

On the Courses in Process ICEU Students Page, the students will start and complete the lesson (view lesson video) and then complete the Lesson Stage Exam.
Completion of Course Final Exam. Then the course will be posted to the Completed Courses page.
Students need to complete end End of Course Survey on the Completed Course Page.
End of Course Survey will need to be completed by all students who successfully complete each GLATA course final exam for them to generate their GLATA EBP BOC CEU Certificates. (Certificates are always available for completed courses on Completed Course Page).

About the Instructor
Tracey Covassin, Ph.D., ATC
Dr. Covassin is an Associate Professor and Certified Athletic Trainer at Michigan State University in the Departments of Kinesiology and Intercollegiate Athletics. Her research in sport-related concussion includes sex and age differences in concussion outcomes, neurocognitive impairments, and issues associated with multiple concussions. Dr. Covassin currently directs a multi-site high school and college sport-concussion outreach program in the Mid-Michigan area. Dr. Covassin has over 45 professional publications and 65 presentations, and has received over $650,000 in funding as a Principal or Co-Principal Investigator from external sources including the National Operating Committee of Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE), National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Research and Education Foundation, NFL Charities, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition, she was appointed to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Sport-Related Concussion in Youth Committee. The committee will review current literature on concussions, their causes and the relationship of hits to the head during sport, the effectiveness of protective devices and equipment, screening and diagnosis, prevention, management and treatment. They will release an evidence-based report for the government, legislation, NIH, and military.
