Teen Exertional Heat Illness (EHI) - Communicable Disease Course is a Heat Injury - Communicable Disease Course for all Middle School and High School Coaches, Administrators, Parents, and Athletes. The Teen Heat Injury - Communicable Disease Course contains the following information in regards to a wide range of heat injury and communicable disease prevention techniques that apply to a wide range of Middle School and High School Sports:
1. Benefits of an athlete being acclimated to the heat
2. Signs and symptoms of exertional heat illness (EHI)
3. Simple steps to identify players in trouble
4. Factors that heat up the body core
5. Types of fluid to avoid and salty snacks to consume
6. Steps to take during a heat emergency
7. Emergency care when your player goes down
8. Fungi, bacteria and viruses cause the majority of sports-related skin infections
9. It is important to note that although it is important to know about these skin fungal infections, as they are more common in athletes, none of these fungal infections pose restrictions for players to play sports
10. Prevention of Infections in Sports include: Basic Personal Hygiene, immunizations, care of personal clothing and equipment.
Taking This Course
This course consists of 3 lessons and a final exam. Each lesson consists of a video and/or other lesson materials and a stage exam. Stage exams must be passed prior to continuing to the next lesson or taking the course Final exam. Stage exams must be retaken as many times as required in order to pass with an 80%.
Students only have 2 attempts to pass the course final exam. After passing the final exam (with a score of 80% of higher) the student will be able to print out a certificate of completion. If a student fails to pass the final in 2 attempts, you will be required to re-pay for the course and go through the complete course again.
Youth courses are designed for people working with children from 3-19 years old. Make sure you select the proper Governing Body when entering your credentials. (NOTE: For Youth courses, Governing body CAN'T be Middle School or High School).
Student Registration and ICEU Course Instructions
Students will first have to register as a student by filling out and submitting a completed Innovative CEUs, LLC (ICEU) student registration page .
On ICEU students Home Page student needs to click on credentials top took bar on right to add Credentials. To qualify for all of the ICEU High School Coaching Courses: Student Credentials must be listed as indicated below:
Age Level: Either 13-15 years old or 14-19 years old
Governing Body: Must be either Middle School or High School
Student Role: Any
After setting their student credentials all available ICEU High School Coaching Courses will be displayed on the students Home Page (Click on the Home Button).
Any of the ICEU High School Coaching Courses seen on students ICEU Home Page, can be added to their cart by clicking the Add to Cart button.
After selecting all ICEU High School Coaching Courses courses students want to purchase, they can check out of shopping cart and put in a COUPON Code if they have one prior to check out.
Course Completion Information:

After purchasing a course it will show on the Courses Not Started Page. (Top Navigation button - Courses Not Started).
To start any of these ICEU Coaching courses, just click on the Click to Start link next to the course you want to start. Once a course has been started it will be moved to the Courses in Process.
On the Courses in Process ICEU Students Page, the students will start and complete the lesson (view lesson video) and then complete the Lesson Stage Exam.
Completion of Course Final Exam. Then the course will be posted to the Completed Courses page.
Students need to complete end End of Course Survey on the Completed Course Page.
End of Course Survey will need to be completed by all students who successfully complete each ICEU High School Coaching Courses course final exam for them to generate their ICEU High School Coaching Certificates. (Certificates are always available for completed courses on Completed Course Page).

About the Instructor
Marietta Vazquez, MD
Dr. Marietta Vazquez was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She graduated Cum Laude from Yale University in 1990. She continued her education attending the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine from 1990-1994. She then returned to Yale and completed a Pediatric Internship and Residency at the Yale New Haven Children's Hospital. Interested in Infectious Diseases she continued with a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases, also at Yale. During her fellowship in Pediatric infectious diseases, Dr. Vazquez obtained a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Minority Medical Faculty Development Award (now the Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development program Award).
She is currently an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Yale University School of Medicine in Pediatric Infectious diseases and general Pediatrics. She is an Associate Director of the Yale Pediatrics Residency Program, and Co-Director of the Yale Pediatric Global Health Track. Her research interests include studies of the effectiveness of pediatric vaccines, in particular: the long-term effectiveness of varicella vaccine in children, the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, the Lyme vaccine, the influenza vaccine and rotavirus vaccine. Her research also focuses on the clinical and molecular epidemiology of respiratory viruses in children, in particular Human Metapneumovirus infection, and its possible link to asthma, which affects Hispanics in the US at the highest rate. The majority of the patients attending the clinic where she works are minorities, fueling Vazquez's interest in evaluating how infectious diseases affect minority populations.
Dr. Vazquez was appointed by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to be a voting member of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which consists of 15 experts responsible for developing vaccine recommendations for the United States. The ACIP provides advice and guidance to the Secretary, HHS, the Assistant Secretary for Health, and the Director, of the CDC regarding the most appropriate selection of vaccines and related agents for effective control of vaccine-preventable diseases in the civilian population.
She lives in Guilford, CT with her husband and three young children.
Mike Ryan, PT,ATC,CES,PES
Mike Ryan is a 26 year veteran of the NFL as a Head Athletic Trainer and Physical Therapist for our Jacksonville Jaguars after 6 years as an assistant with the New York Giants. Mike is the founder of Mike Ryan Sports Medicine, Inc. a company focused on introducing effective sports medicine techniques to athletes young and old.
Mr. Ryan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from Central Connecticut State University and his Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Connecticut.
Mike is the fortunate recipient of many awards including the 2014 Professional Athletic Trainer of the Year Award by the Athletic Trainers Association of Florida, the 2014 Bourdon Sports Medicine Achievement Award and a 2013 induction into Southington (CT) Sports Hall of Fame.
Mike was the President of the Professional Football Athletic Trainers' Society (PFATS) Research & Education Foundation for 15 years. He's presently a member of the Korey Stringer Institute Medical & Science Advisory Board.
An avid fitness enthusiast, Mike continues to participate in challenging races around the world. Among his accomplishments: 6 Ironman triathlons, 3 Escape from Alcatraz triathlons, he's Ran with the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain twice, and completed the Run-Up the Empire State Building in New York City 3 times.
